Greyhound Adoption League of Texas, Inc. - or GALT - is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation operating in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex and throughout Texas. GALT was established in 2001 and operates entirely through volunteer efforts and donations from the public. Their mission is to "facilitate placing Greyhounds in loving, responsible, forever homes" but that doesn't even scratch the surface of what this organization does on a day-to-day basis. The volunteers take care of these retired athletes in every way, from providing medical care and fostering to fund-raising and raising awareness, so that the dogs live out their post-racing days in loving, permanent homes.
Most people think about Greyhounds and think of dog racing, and most of the dogs that GALT places are retired racing athletes. After their racing career ends, which is usually when they are about 2-5 years old, these dogs need to find loving and knowledgeable homes where they can live for the remainder of their lives. This is where GALT steps in by holding adoption events around the DFW area and educating the public about the calm and gentle nature of these dogs. The Greyhound Adoption League of Texas website has an informative section that describes the characteristics and common features of Greyhounds, some of which may surprise you. For instance, I assumed that Greyhounds would need a lot of exercise given their natural tendency to chase. Not true - Greyhounds are "45 mile-per-hour couch potatoes" which only require walks 3-4 times per week. Who knew?
Greyhound Adoption League of Texas, Inc. is governed by a Board of Directors, headed by John McQuade, as well as Officers, Advisory Directors, Committee Chairmen and Directors, and countless volunteers such as donors, photographers, veterinarian hospitals, foster families, pet sitters, trainers, kennels, and event coordinators. GALT holds a Volunteer Orientation Program periodically and asks that all volunteers attend at least one session annually. Volunteers are needed for fostering, transport to and from events and medical appointments, administrative roles, as well as other duties. The minimum age for volunteering is 13 years, and there is no maximum age. Volunteers aged 13-16 must be accompanied at all times by a parent or legal guardian who is also an active volunteer. All volunteers under 18 must have parental consent.
