Histiocytoma relapse
Friday, 29 May 2009

This week, Dr. Manley answers a question about a Histiocytoma relapses.

This week's question:
Dear Dr. Manley,
I have a 3-year old Lab mix who recently had a histiocytoma below his nose removed. Does he have an increased chance of getting one of these tumors again? Also, I read that these are benign, but should they still be sent off for a biopsy? My vet did not do a biopsy.

Thank you so much for your help!
Molly W.

Dr. Manley's Reply:
Hi Molly,
Image Histiocytomas are benign tumors mostly seen in young pets. They can resolve without treatment. Growths can occur again, but it is not safe to assume that other growths that develop are the same type of tumor. If other tumors form, consider a non-surgical biopsy to determine if surgery or other therapies are necessary.

Thanks for the question....Dr. Manley
