Debbie O. from Plano writes:
"Lately, my 1 year old Chihuahua (Velma) has been sneezing and has watery eyes. I think she has allergies. Can I give her Benadryl? She is otherwise very healthy and weighs 6 and a half pounds."
Dr. Manley's Reply:
"We use Benedryl (generic name diphenhydramine) at a dosage of 1 mg per pound of body weight, twice daily. It is very safe to use but in rare cases, it can result in drowsiness or hyper excitability. If there is any discharge from the eyes or nose has a yellow or greenish color, you should see your vet. That type of discharge indicates an infection. Thanks for the question....Dr. Manley"

Unfortunately, even the most careful of pet parents may need to find emergency care for their dogs. The first step is to be prepared. Find an emergency clinic close to your home and post their number in a prominent place or save it to your mobile phone. If your dog shows signs of serious injury or trauma, you can call the clinic for advice and if necessary, inform them that you are on your way with your dog so they can prepare for your arrival. |
