Legacy Boxer Rescue is a local non-profit organization that is dedicated to find loving, permanent homes for unwanted Boxers. This wonderful organization rescues boxers from shelters and owners who can no longer care for them. In a few short years, Legacy Boxer Rescue has saved over 500 Boxers and they anticipate saving over 300 in 2008 alone.

ImageLegacy Boxer Rescue was founded by Sharon Sleighter, after unknowingly purchasing a Boxer puppy from a "backyard breeder" and then researching rescue options to find a companion for that pup. Sharon began volunteering with the local rescue group, and in March 2004, Legacy Boxer Rescue was established. The organization's mission is to "create a legacy [Boxers] deserve, a loving family and home of their own." The name Legacy was chosen because they believe a Boxer's future should never be uncertain.

Legacy Boxer Rescue is operated completely by volunteers who dedicate their time and resources to finding homes for this strong and beautiful breed. LBR's website lists a variety of ways the community can assist their organization through volunteer efforts. Here are some ways you can help:

  • Foster homes are needed to provide care and shelter for Boxers who are waiting to be adopted.
  • Transporting Boxers to and from shelters, vets, and Adopt-a-Boxer events.
  • Donations of crates, food, collars, leashes, toys, treats, and/or money.
  • Volunteer your services as a photographer, tax professional, web designer, or any other skill that might be needed by LBR.

ImageIf you are considering adding a Boxer to your family, the LBR website is a great resource for learning more about the typical traits of a Boxer, and provides questions for you to determine whether a Boxer would suit your personality and lifestyle. If you've decided that you're ready to adopt, you can fill out an adoption application online and see photos of the Boxers that are available for adoption. The site also provides information about the adoption process so that you know what to expect.

Keep your dog safe during the New Year's celebrations. Always keep your pet's identification tags on, in case they are scared by fireworks and run away. Be sure that leftover drink glasses are emptied after your celebration - alcohol can be extremely dangerous to pets when ingested. Watch your pet to make sure they do not eat any party decorations like confetti, balloons, or streamers which can be harmful if swallowed.
