Bark For Life of North Dallas Interest Meeting Print
Tuesday, January 17 2012, 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm by admin Hits : 210

The American Cancer Society will be hosting a Bark For Life committee interest meeting on Tuesday, January 17th from 6-7pm at the American Cancer Society, 8900 Carpenter Freeway, Dallas.

Bark For Life is an extension of Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society's signature event. Relay For Life is a an overnight community event that celebrates cancer survivors, remembers those we've lost, and fights back against the disease. Unfortunately, pets are not allowed at the Relay For Life community event, which is why Bark For Life was started!

Bark For Life has the celebrate, remember and fight back characteristics as well. However, Bark For Life also recognize our canine companions, who in many cases, help those living with cancer. Dogs can be amazing emotional care givers for those needing support during tough times.

A typical Bark For Life is a 4-hour event on a Saturday where dog owners come for a dog party! Dog owners participate in games and competitions throughout the event. Past activities have included Musical Sit, Best Dressed Competition, and Dog/Owner Look-A-Like Competition. Additionally, we ask a few members of the cancer survivor community to speak about how their dog or dogs helped them during treatment. For a donation, sponsors are also invited to set up booths around the event. We do like to emphasize that it is a fundraiser, because while fundraising isn't all we do at the American Cancer Society, everything we do depends on it. Fun fundraising pre-event activities in the past have included Yappy Hours (happy hour), Top Dog Calendar (pictures submitted and voted on leading up to the event), and Tail Gates.

I hope this gives you a better idea of Bark For Life! What we need right now are committee members who will help organize and execute the event, as all of our events are volunteer-driven.

Dogs can get sunburned too, so be sure to apply sunscreen when your dog will be out in the sun for extended periods of time. Apply sunscreen to the tips of his ears, bridge of his nose, groin area, inside of the legs and the underbelly. Be sure to use a sunscreen that does NOT contain PABA or Zinc Ozide (which is harmful to dogs if ingested) or a brand made specifically for dogs.
