Down in Louisiana, in New Orleans they have many grand traditions during Mardi Gras. One of them is the parade of the Mystic Krewe of Barkus. Each year, the Krewe chooses a theme and decks out their dogs to the nines. Elaborate floats carry the king and queen, while others ride in wagons or strollers or simply just walk. The parade winds around the Quarter and stirs up a huge crowd of onlookers. Despite all the touristy elements of Mardi Gras in New Orleans, this one is local to the bone.
The Krewe De Chew is really a tribute to Barkus and, hopefully, the start of a new local tradition. We don’t expect everyone to spend elaborate amounts of money on costumes and dog floats, but we do hope that participants are inspired by what they see from Barkus. Have fun with it! Get creative!
The parade is on Sunday, March 6 from 4-6pm, but the Mardi Gras festivities last all weekend! See the Go Oak Cliff website for more information.
