TEXAS HUMANE LEGISLATION NETWORK TO PARTICIPATE IN HUMANE LOBBY DAY
APRIL 2, 2009

The Texas Humane Legislation Network’s North Texas Chapter, in conjunction with the Humane Society of the United States and local rescue organizations is gearing up for Humane Lobby Day in Austin on April 2, 2009. The purpose of the event is to education representatives about the importance of legislation protecting animals. Hundreds of animal lovers from across the state are expected to participate in the event, which will begin with a lobbying workshop in the morning and will include visits with lawmakers throughout the day.

THLN, the only statewide lobbying organization in Texas devoted entirely to animal-friendly legislation, recently created a North Texas Chapter. Chapter President Stacey Kivowitz said the chapter is off to a great start with over 300 members and several events planned for 2009. “When people read about animal abuse, they always think ‘There ought to be a law against that.’ That’s exactly what THLN is here for,” she said. “We want to get the word out that people can make a difference by getting involved.”

The 2009 session is one of the busiest in recent memory for animal-related legislation, with dozens of bills having been presented regarding animals. THLN is actively supporting several bills, among them bills relating to puppy mills, cockfighting, protecting animals in domestic abuse cases, and chaining dogs.

Dogs can get sunburned too, so be sure to apply sunscreen when your dog will be out in the sun for extended periods of time. Apply sunscreen to the tips of his ears, bridge of his nose, groin area, inside of the legs and the underbelly. Be sure to use a sunscreen that does NOT contain PABA or Zinc Ozide (which is harmful to dogs if ingested) or a brand made specifically for dogs.
